EQUALITIES CHAMPION LINDA RILEY JOINS ACTION BREAKS SILENCE AS PATRON
Leading British equalities campaigner, Linda Riley, has been appointed patron of the international women’s charity Action Breaks Silence. Action Breaks Silence was set up in 2013 to create a world where women and girls can live free from the fear of sexual and gender-based violence. It is currently working in India, South Africa and in 2016 will be working in the UK.
Ms Riley, who founded the European Diversity Awards and Global Diversity List, has spent a lifetime campaigning for women’s rights and on LGBT+ issues.
As the co-founder of diversity events company, Square Peg Media, Riley led a series of high profile national events for women including Opportunities for Women and the Diversity Careers Show from which she pressed some of the country’s biggest employers for increased female representation at senior level - a campaign she took to the House of Commons.
Upon her appointment as Action Breaks Silence Patron, Linda Riley promised to help the charity continue to push women’s issues higher up the agenda, particularly highlighting the urgent need to end violence towards women.
Linda Riley said:
“Action Breaks Silence is an incredibly important charity that not only works to protect women from gender-based violence but also educates young men about the impact of violence on women. It is an issue that often fails to get the publicity it deserves. It is about time that changed. Throughout my career I have fought for women’s rights and I will do that even more through this role. As Patron, I will work hard to push the mission of ABS and violence against women higher up the agenda in the UK.”
Action Breaks Silence’s Founder and President, Debi Steven, commented:
“We are honoured that Linda has accepted our invitation to become the first Patron of Action Breaks Silence, as she has dedicated her life to making the world a better and fairer place for women. We look forward very much to having Linda alongside us as we continue our drive to make women and girls in India, South Africa and the UK feel safer and more empowered, by offering a combination of our two educational programmes to boys, women and girls in marginalised communities.”
Since its creation in July 2013, Action Breaks Silence has already taught a total of 29,000 women and girls in India (in Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, Pondicherry, the Alleppy coast of Kerala and Pune) and South Africa (Soweto, Lenasia and Pretoria West) FREE OF CHARGE.
The charity offers a two-tiered educational programme; the first, a workshop, comprising a fact-filled motivational discussion and physical skills, created to empower and protect women and girls who are vulnerable to sexual and gender-based violence and, importantly, who feel they have no voice or support. The second is an interactive workshop for seven to 12 year old boys which is specifically designed to build feelings of deep-rooted empathy towards women and girls and, in the longer-term, prevent abusive or violent behaviour.
