ABOUT US

What Is Gender-Based Violence?

Gender-based violence is "violence that is directed against a woman because she is a woman or that affects women disproportionately. It includes acts that inflict physical, mental or sexual harm or suffering, threats of such acts, coercion and other deprivations of liberty." (UN Committee for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, ‘General Recommendations No 19’).

By teaching girls to be empowered and boys to feel empathy, our work ensures sustainable changes in attitudes, reconnecting communities through a united wish to care about the wellbeing and safety of others.

Who We Are

In 2016, our founder and CEO Debi Steven (MA, School of Social Sciences, specialising in Women and Child Abuse) designed the Action Breaks Silence twelve-hour longitudinal community intervention, that approaches every primary school as a micro-community.

Action Breaks Silence uses community intervention to end gender-based violence. We aim to do this by viewing primary schools as micro-communities. We engage, educate and empower local communities to become active bystanders through the programmes listed below.

  1. Empowerment through Self-Defence Workshops, 4 hour parachute intervention
workshops delivered to girls at Grade 4 and above, as well as to female teachers and caregivers.
  2. Train the Trainer Programme, used to upskill young people to deliver the Action Breaks Silence programmes.
  3. 12 hour Primary Schools Programme, a longitudinal approach to stopping gender-based violence, where each girl and boy child at selected primary schools will, over two years participate in a community intervention to stop gender-based violence.
  4. Action Breaks Silence Youth Ambassador Programme, where we plan to select youth from the high schools that we engage with to mentor younger students at the schools. This platform will be used to increase awareness around, and engage young people to become part of the solution to, gender-based violence.
